Kaiten Sushi

Quick! Get that Shrimp!
A more relaxed way to enjoy Japan’s most famous dish.
At a kaiten sushi restaurant, you can relax in your booth while the food glides by your table on a conveyor belt. And not just sushi, but French fries and cheesecake too! Join Rachel and Josh as they stuff themselves for a fraction of what a traditional sushi shop would cost.

sushi Sushi is huge, and getting bigger every day. And for many people, the chance to visit a traditional sushi shop in Japan would be a dream come true. But let’s face facts. For some of the rest of us, sushi can be a bit daunting. The unknown fish laid out in its case, the absence of a menu, the jargon used only in sushi shops and the sometimes severe looking master. Where do you begin?

If this is you, let me make a suggestion. Kaiten sushi. Kaiten means revolving, and in a kaiten sushi restaurant you just take a seat and wait for something promising to roll by on the conveyor belt that winds through the dining area.

Purists may wonder about the quality of kaiten sushi, but as often as not these restaurants buy from the same sources as the more traditional places, and the people making the sushi know what they’re doing. If you get tired of fish, there are also plates of fried chicken, roast pork, fried potatoes, eggs and more. And for dessert, just lean back and wait for the cheesecake to come your way. Because the atmosphere is so much more relaxed, kaiten sushi shops have become very popular with young people and families.

And that brings us to one real advantage of these shops, the price. Although they may buy from the same markets, they probably won’t buy the jewel-perfect fish traditional restaurants prefer, and they buy larger quantities, holding the prices down. Couple this with the easy to understand pricing system (you pay by the plate, with different prices clearly indicated by different colors), and suddenly you can afford to take the whole family out for sushi. Spin on in and give it a try.
