Yokohama Raumen Museum

The Yokohama Raumen Museum is another food theme park, this one devoted to one of Japan’s true obsessions, the now world-famous noodle soup called ramen. The museum’s odd spelling of ramen is intentional, an old fashioned pronunciation that sounds nostalgic to Japanese visitors.

The museum documents the history of ramen in Japan, beginning with the largely unnoticed arrival of a Chinese style of hand-pulled noodles called lah mien, and the dish’s subsequent development into a culinary juggernaut sold in one form or another around the globe.

The heart of the museum is a recreation of a Tokyo street circa 1958, the year instant-ramen was introduced, where you can wander from one ramen stand to the next sampling different regional styles from a large number of Japan’s best-known ramen chains. Another attraction here is the Nissin Cup Noodles factory, where visitors can design their own instant ramen, including the type of broth and up to four ingredients, and take it home. There is certainly better ramen available elsewhere if you know where to go, but for real noodleheads the museum is great fun.
