Shin-hotaka Hotspting

Tucked deep in the Northern Alps of Gifu Prefecture, the Oku Hida Onsen Villages are actually five separate alpine hot springs, and an absolute delight to anyone who takes pleasure in hot water, mountain scenery and the sound of high rivers rushing over stone.

The five villages are Hirayu, Fukuchi, Shin-Hirayu, Tochio and Shin-hodaka.  Hirayu in particular, has enjoyed modest prosperity for centuries and offers travelers a relaxed, elegant atmosphere.  Each of the villages has, in addition to the more traditional onsen inns, free outdoor baths with stunning views of alpine scenery.  These baths are mixed-gender, making them a great choice for couples or families.  Bathing suits are permitted if you’re the shy type, otherwise just take the plunge and enjoy the feeling of relaxing in a natural hot bath while the cool, high-country air plays across your exposed skin.

The inns in this area can be a little pricey, but camping is available at most of the villages.  It’s possible, though sometimes a bit slow, to travel the region by public transportation.  If you’ve been thinking about renting a car, this may be a good time for it, as long as you remember the local roads are often very narrow, winding affairs.  For hikers, the whole area is a paradise in late summer, with groomed trails crisscrossing the high peaks and incredible views in every direction.  A few minutes south of Hirayu, the 64-meter high Hirayu Waterfall makes a good short hike.  In winter the frozen falls are illuminated for the Hirayu Waterfall Ice Festival.

For travelers visiting Gifu Prefecture to see Takayama or Shirakawago, the Oku Hida Onsen Villages are close at hand, offering a great opportunity to combine Japanese hot spring culture with the country’s best mountain scenery.
