Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine - Omori Town
The town of Omori shares its history with that of the nearby silver mine. The town's basic layout dates to the magistrate Takemura Tangonokami's relocation of the magistrate's offices to the current location. The town was shaped during the Edo Period, with government offices and quarters for housing visiting officials established near the magistrate’s office.
The town’s streets are lined with samurai residences and merchant homes, and the historic atmosphere is carefully maintained by town residents who work hard to share their heritage with visitors. You can see both the magistrate's offices and courthouse, along with a number of old shrines, temples and family residences.
The second largest building in Omori is the Kumagai Family Residence, which was enormously influential during the town's heyday. The family was involved in mining, the inspection and weighing of the silver tax, sake production and more. The house is impressive enough by itself, but also contains priceless artifacts of the period that help give a complete picture of what life might have been like for wealthy merchants at the height of Omori's power. At the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine Museum, you'll see displays of official documents, picture scrolls, silver ingots, refined silver and mining tools. Afterward, stroll the streets, stop by Saijoji Temple or Kigami Shrine, and just soak in the atmosphere. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time to Edo-era Japan.
